Study of deep inelastic reactions with prompt γ-ray spectroscopy

Description

Prompt γ-rays emitted following the interaction of 50Ti +208Pb just above the Coulomb barrier have been studied using the TESSA3 array at Daresbury Laboratory. The Ti + Ph system lies at the threshold of the onset of the extra-push phenomenon, where dissipative processes in the initial stages of the interaction lead to inhibition of fusion-like processes. Prompt γ-rays from target-like deep-inelastic reaction products have been observed and level schemes established. Level schemes for 33 nuclei have been determined, the lightest nucleus being produced by the transfer of 18 nucleons from the target. The decay schemes have been used to determine the angular momentum taken up by the Pb-like fragments. The BGO inner ball was used to provide total γ-multiplicity information, determining, together with the discrete spectroscopy, the total angular momentum transferred from relative motion to intrinsic rotation. The results can be compared to calculations of angular momentum transfer assuming differing degrees of macroscopic tangential friction
