Initial irradiation test of coated fuel particles for the HTGR

  • 1. Tsinghua Univ., Beijing (China). Inst. of Nuclear Energy Technology

Description

The coated fuel particle is the key fuel element in the high temperature gas cooled reactor (HTGR). The irradiating test, needed to examine the characteristics of the fuel element, was performed by statically irradiating the coated fuel particles for the 10 MW HTGR. The coated fuel particles were put in a sealed airtight capsule and irradiated in the FRJ-2 reactor. The measured burnup was about 5% fima and the irradiation temperature was 400-500 degree C. The post-irradiation examination included burnup measurements, gamma spectrometry, surface inspection, and ceramic graphic examination. The examination results confirm that the coated fuel particles are intact with no defects
