Fuel element load/unload machine for the Italian PEC reactor

Creators

  • 1. GEC Energy Systems Ltd., Leicester (UK)

Description

A load/unload machine has been designed for the PEC reactor as part of the Italian fast reactor programme. The machine handles fuel elements, control rods and other components in the sodium-immersed core of the reactor. It is designed in two parts: the lower part, which consists of a reactor closure and guide assembly, a telescopic tube, and a pantograph-type extending leg and gripper; and the upper part, which stands proud of the reactor and drives and controls the lower part. The paper considers the design, operation, development and testing of the drives and main components of the machine. (author)
