1995 annual report of the BC Citizen's Advisory Committee on oil spill prevention and response

A committee comprised of BC citizens with some experience in oil spill issues was established in 1990 to give advise to the BC Ministry of Environment, Lands and Parks. The committee was responsible for conducting discussions with government, industry and public representatives on the state and progress of oil spill matters, particularly on the attempts to prevent and respond to spills. During the past year the committee has focused on three main issues: (1) The amendment to the Canada Shipping Act which resulted in the establishment of a Marine Response Organization for the whole BC coast, (2) expediting the implementation of the recommendations made by the States/BC Oil Spill Task Force through the Council of Canadian Ministers of the Environment, and (3) address the issue of impact of a medium or major spill on wildlife. This report summarizes the Committee's recommendations, and reviews the status of spill prevention five years after the Committee's original recommendations were submitted. 2 tabs
