Evaluation of the incidence of metastases following local microwave therapy, 60Co radiation therapy and combined microwave-60Co therapy of the F1 and F10 lines of the B16 mouse melanoma and an amelanotic hamster melanoma
Description
The effect of local microwave therapy upon the incidence of metastasis was investigated. The effect was studied on an amelanotic melanoma syngeneic to Golden Syrian hamsters, the low metastatic F1 line of th B16 melanoma syngeneic to C57B1/6J mice and the high metastatic F10 line of the B16 melanoma syngeneic to C57B1/6J mice. The object of the study was to determine whether the use of microwaves to induce primary tumor hyperthermia would have any effect upon the incidence of metastases. The study included three treatments for each cell line. These treatments were microwave (2450 MHz) hyperthermia, 60Co radiation exposure and combined microwave-60Co radiation. 60Co radiation exposure was 701 R per treatment for the hamster melanoma and 618 R per treatment for the B16 melanomas. Microwave hyperthermia for the hamsters was maintained as 430 for 15 minutes and at 420C for 15 minutes for the mice. The animals were treated daily for 5 consecutive days
