High-current pulsed accelerator with an electron beam of a tape type

Description

Specific features of a high-current pulsed accelerator with an electron beam cross section of 2x26 cm are described and its block-diagram is presented. A low-inductance accelerating tube and a discharger described provide for a beam front of about 4x10-9 s at the total current of about 3x104A. The pulse duration is 3.5x10-8 s, the electron energy is about 300 keV. The accelerating tube is rectangular in shape 420x210x70 mm in size. The cathode unit is designed to allow the accelerating gap to be varied. The tube inductance is 10-8 H. Vacuum from 10-5 to 10-6 torr is maintained in the tube. The voltage pulse with an amplitude of 350 kV is formed by a coaxial double forming line. The coaxial version makes the design simpler and reduces dimensions compared to those of a slab line. Glycerine is used as dielectric. Unlike water glycerine dies not require elevated pressure in the line or periodically operating purification and degassing systems, thus the facility operation is simplified. The cathode working surface has transversal grooves filled with epoxy resin. It promotes the spreading of a plasma layer the beam is extracted from. The cathode provides for about 2000 pulses without the beam parameter deterioration. The operation of the accelerator for a year proves it to be reliable and simple in maintenance
