Charged particle reactions for radiation protection of a medium energy cyclotron

  • 1. Inst. fuer Kernenergetik und Energiesysteme (IKE), Univ. Stuttgart (Germany)

Description

For calculating the radiation protection and optimizing the shielding of a negative ion cyclotron, charged particle cross sections were needed to determine the production of neutron and gamma radiation. Double differential cross sections were calculated with the hybrid model of Blann using the programm Alice together with the systematics of continuum angular distributions by Kalbach (1988). Comparisons with published experimental data were made for 27Al, 53Cr, 56Fe, 90Zr, and 181Ta at about 22 MeV which showed satisfying results with the preequilibrium-emission at higher energies so that the differential cross sections could be determined for the total energy range required. Finally the model calculations had to be extended to other target nuclides needed to predict all neutron and gamma sources. Integral measurements are planned, so that the final dose rates will be checked. (orig.)
