Vacuum ultraviolet spectroscopy of some hydrocarbons by electron impact technique

Description

A detailed description of the construction and operation of the electron impact spectrometer of the Electron Impact Laboratory at the Chemistry Institute of Federal University of Rio de Janeiro are presented. The main characteristics of this spectrometer are: incident energy from 0.5 to 3.0 KeV; angular range from -600 to + 600; energy loss from 0 to 500 eV; energy resolution from 0.5 to 2.5 eV and; electron velocity analyser equal to electrostatic (Mollenstedt type. The data acquisition system is based on a microcomputer Motorola; recently an APPLE II system has been incorporated to the spectrometer. Electron energy loss spectra for the nitrogen molecule as well as for some hydrocarbons (C2H6, C2H4, C2H2) have been obtained. The data were converted into double differential cross sections and generalized oscillator strenghts. (author)

Apresentam-se a descricao e operacao do espectrometro de impacto de eletrons construido no Laboratorio de Impacto de Eletrons do Instituto de Quimica da UFRJ. As principais caracteristicas do espectrometro sao: energia de eletrons de 0,5 a 3,0 KeV; faixa angular de -600 a +600; perda de energia de 0 a 500 eV; resolucao de energia de 0,5 a 2,5 eV e; analisador de velocidades de eletrons igual ao eletrostatico, tipo Mollenstedt. A aquisicao de dados foi feita atraves do uso de um microcomputador Motorola e mais recentemente com o emprego de um UNITRON (Apple II). Foram obtidos espectros de perda de energia de eletrons para a molecula de nitrogenio e de alguns hidrocarbonetos (C2H6, C2H4, C2H2). Estes dados foram convertidos em secao de choque diferencial dupla e posteriormente em forca do oscilador generalizado. (autor)
