Practical applications of gamma irradiation

Description

The excitation of molecules by gamma radiation such that free radicals are produced is a useful characteristic for large-scale irradiation of products. A typical irradiating facility, using the most commonly used cobalt-60 source is described. Apart from the sterilization of medical equipment, foodstuffs are being irradiated to increase shelf-life, and to disinfect and decontaminate etc. 1 fig
