Incineration of low-level radioactive waste - Experience with installation, operation and decommissioning of an incineration plant

  • 1. Decontamination Dept., Kernforschungsanlage Juelich GmbH, Juelich (Germany, F.R.)

Description

The Juelich Incineration Plant for the combustion of low level radioactive waste was in action operation from 1976 to 1986. During this time many changes have been made to optimize the incineration and the off-gs cleaning system. The throughput of the plant was about 80 to 100 kg/h. The reaction was easy to control, the burn-out of ash and off-gas were very good. The very stringent requirements of the German Radiation Safety Ordinance and the Clean Air Act could be fulfilled. In 1986 the plant had been decommissioned. This work could be completed without incorporation of radioactivity and without spreading of contamination. A new plant is under construction
