Fixation of radioactive materials released from reactor cooling water by sandy soil

Environmental effect of radioactive materials should be evaluated if an unexpected leakage of reactor cooling water occurs. Migration of ionic radioactive materials in the ground has been widely studied regarding the waste disposal, however, that of non-ionic materials such as radioactive cobalt in reactor cooling water has not been so much studied. In this paper. the fixation of radioactive materials from the reactor cooling water by soil has been investigated by means of a column bedded with sandy soil. It is shown that migrating behavior of the non-ionic cobalt is largely different from that of ionic cobalt. The empirical formula for penetrating ratio of the non-ionic cobalt through sandy soil is derived from the experiment. On the basis of the data obtained from both experiment and accidental release of the reactor cooling water, a method is discussed to evaluate the migration of radioactive cobalt in sandy soil. 原子炉1次冷却水(以下炉水)がなんらかの原因により系外へ漏出した場合、漏出放射性物質による環境への影響の評価が必要となる。評価に際して放射性物質の地層中挙動についての知識が基礎となるが、これについての研究は放射性廃棄物の地中処分に関連して、主として放射性物質がイオン状の場合について行われており、炉水中放射性物質のような非イオン状のものに関するものは少ない。本報では、炉水中放射性物質の砂層中の挙動についての知見を得るため、カラム法により調べた炉水中放射性Coの砂層による捕集について述べた。これらの結果からイオン状放射性物質との差異を明確にし、炉水中放射性Coの砂層中透過についての実験式を誘導し、次に実際の炉水漏出事故例を参考に、炉水中放射性Coの砂層中漏出時の評価方法を検討する。 (著者)Additional details
