Effect of cations and anions on 137Cs and 65Zn adsorption in soils

Adsorption studies were carried out by treating six different soils with three levels viz. 3.7, 7.4 and 11.1 kBq/g soil of radionuclides i.e. either 65Zn or 137Cs. With the increase in the level of 65Zn and 137Cs and increase in adsorption of these radionuclides was observed in all the soils. The values for distribution coefficient (KD) and the retardation factors were found to be greater at higher level of radionuclides applied to the soils. Application of K reduced the 137Cs adsorption in soils considerably and this effect was more with higher level of K (80 ppm K). Mg application lowered 65Zn adsorption in acid soils but resulted in an increase in adsorption of 65Zn in alkaline soils. Similar was the effect of application of phosphate on 65Zn adsorption but there was no such influence of phosphate on 137Cs adsorption. (author). 13 refs., 5 tabs
