Nuclear technology in Spain - a general overview

Since 1968 three generations of nuclear power plants have been built in Spain. The participation of local industry in building and operating of these plants has been increasing steadily. The development of the nuclear power plant construction program has reduced dependence on imported energy - at present, more than 30% of the electric supply is nuclear - at a cost which is very competitive with alternatives. In third-generation plants, about 85% of the initial investment and 75% of the final kWh cost relates to the participation of local industry. Thus a highly qualified industry, which would have been inconceivable a few years ago without an ambitious and steady nuclear program, has been successfully developed
