Neutron (stripping) channel of the JINR synchrotron

Description

As a result of stripping of deuterons accelerated in the JINR proton synchrotron a beam of neutrons was formed with regulated momentum and stabilized intensity. The neutron port was formed in such a manner as to use the stripping neutrons emitted at the angle no larger than 1 mrad to the direction of deuterons. An Al target of 1 cm in diameter and 3 cm in length placed inside the accelerator satisfied these conditions. A method was described of discarding neutrons in each cycle of acceleration which allows achievino. the duration of discarding particles to the target of 0.6-1.0 ms. The system of dosage of a neutron beam was functioning steadily at the intensity of the internal beam of 107-109 accelerated deuterons, yeilding approximately 100 neutrons per a photoqraph in the chamber. In order to determine the neutron pulse spectrum and the direction of channel in a 1.meter hydrogen chamber three-pronged stars were used. The total of 55 thousand stars were measured at eight energies. The stripping neutron angular distributions and the neutron pulse spectra at Psub(π)=1.73-5.1 GeV/c were presented. The width of the neutron pulse spectrum in the channel changed from 2.6% to 3.4% at Psub(π)1.73 GeV/c and Psub(π)--5.10 GeV/c, respectively
