Description
A fluctuationless mechanism for martensitic transformations consisting of the appearance and development of a lattice instability triggered by defects is presented. A number of properties associated with martensitic transformations are qualitatively explained. As a quantitative example, the theory of the displacive β-ω transformation is constructed. It is argued that this transformation is triggered by interstitial impurities (O,N,C)
