Methodical experiences on application of near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) for breeding of rapeseed kernels

Description

In rapeseed breeding special efforts are undertaken to manipulate genetically the composition of constituents in the seed. Success in this field depends on efficient analytical methods for a determination of the relevant constituents. Therefore, near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) has a high potential in rapeseed breeding applications. Being based on physical principles, NIRS allows a fast, easy, and non-destructive determination of several constituents by one single measurement. In this study, the applicability of NIRS for quality breeding of rapeseed was investigated. Using a type of NIRS-instrument designed for scientific applications, at first general prerequisites for the optimal development of NIRS methods have been investigated. Then specific NIRS methods for the determination of several constituents were established for NIRS measurement of intact rapeseed kernels. Lastly NIRS routine analysis was tested in rapeseed breeding applications
