Experimental study of the Higgs-b/c couplings in photon-proton collisions
Description
After the commissioning of the Large Hadron Collider, new insights into the physics of elementary particles are expected, in particular, particle physicists hope for the detection of the Higgs boson. Measuring the Higgs couplings to the charm and beauty quarks will be of great importance to verify or to falsify existing theories in particle physics. In the present diploma thesis, it has been studied whether the couplings mentioned above would be measurable at a Large Hadron-Photon Collider in associated production. On one hand, the design parameters of such a machine were investigated, on the other hand, several simulation programs were used to predict essential properties of the desired processes, like cross sections and kinematics. The result of the present work is that the single events are detectable and, for the beauty process, the background is low enough for the events to stand out. However, using the present technology, the required luminosity can not be achieved. Detailed introductions into the physical and technological concepts hat are fundamental for this study as well as into the used software round off the thesis' contents. (orig.)
