Description

Full text: The study of the structure and the reaction mechanisms involving light exotic nuclei requires the development of new models and experimental techniques. Near the drip lines, an isovector force directly related to the charge asymmetry reduces the binding energy of nucleons which are in excess. Near the nucleon emission threshold, the single particle wave functions have more extended tails, especially for low angular momenta. In such conditions, also the small energy contribution of residual interactions strongly influences the properties of exotic nuclei. Well known examples of halo structures are represented by 11 Be ground and first excited states, where the weakly bound (<0.5 MeV) 2s1/2 or 1 p1/2 neutron interacts with both an inert or excited 10 Be core. Detailed studies on this nucleus demonstrate how these assumptions are crucial in order to give a reasonable interpretation of experimental data. (Author)
