Radiocarbon dating of quaternary sea shells

Creators

Description

The causes of the errors in the age of shells determined by radiocarbon dating are discussed. A method is suggested for dating shells of mollusks with the aid of C14. The optimum conditions for obtaining lithium carbide through interaction of carbon dioxide given off by carbonates and of metal lithium were experimentally established. Two methods are suggested for producing lithium carbide. The above dating techniquws have been tested on specimens of shells from terraces of the Black and the Caspian seas. Dating of some specimens of shells is conducted for two fractions to obtain reliable data
