EPR study of cesium plutonium(IV) nitrate Cs2Pu(NO3)6
Description
Electron paramagnetic resonance of cesium plutonium(IV) nitrate, Cs2Pu(NO3)6, has been studied. It is found that the radioactivity of plutonium isotopes involving alpha particle emission produces self-irradiation effects. The paramagnetic species/centre that is formed as a result of these self-irradiation processes is identified to be NO2. The expected resonance due to Pu(IV) ion having the electronic ground state 5I4 could not be detected and this is possibly because the spinlattice relaxation time is very short. (orig.)
Abstract (German)
Die EPR-Resonanz des Cs2Pu(NO3)6 wurde gemessen. Dabei zeigten sich Folgen der Selbstbestrahlung mit Alpha-Teilchen. Die dabei gebildeten paramagnetischen Produkte wurden als NO2 erkannt. Die Resonanz des Pu(IV)-Ions im elektronischen Grundzustand 5I4 wurde nicht wahrgenommen. Moeglicherweise liegt der Grund darin, dass die Spin-Gitter-Relaxationszeit zu kurz ist.
