Carbon determination in uranium and its compounds

Description
Carbon content in uranium and its compounds, especially ceramic grade UO2, must be controlled rigorously. A method for the determination of carbon with the aid of commercial equipment which uses platinum as a catalyst for the oxidation of CO, and infrared cells for CO2 measurement is described. The detection limit is 5μg C/g U and the determination range is 0.0005 to 5% C/U. The method is being used routinely to control the carbon content in nuclear fuel materials. (Author)

O conteudo de carbono no uranio e em seus compostos, especialmente UO2 ceramico deve ser rigorosamente controlado. Descreve-se um metodo para determinacao de carbono com auxilio de um equipamento comercial que usa platina como catalisador para a oxidacao do CO e celulas de infravermelho para medida de CO2. O limite de deteccao e de 5μg C/g U e a faixa de determinacao e de 0,0005 a 5% C/U. O metodo esta sendo utilizado rotineiramente para controlar o conteudo de carbono em materiais combustiveis nucleares. (Autor)Additional details
