Description
The highest levels of contamination in the Federal Republic of Germany following the Chernobyl reactor accident were those determined for the Berchtesgaden region in the Southeast of Bavaria. The exposure to naturally occurring rays in this area is of the order of 1.1 mSv/year, the average shares of terrestrian and cosmic radiation in the total dose being 0.7 mSv/year and 0.4 mSv/year, respectively. The additional radioactive burden due to the Chernobyl reactor breakdown was calculated to amount to approx. 0.8 mSv for 1986. This added load was found to have declined to 0.1 mSv by 1991. All values are expressed as effective equivalent doses. During the period from March 1987 until October 1989 chromosomal analyses were performed for 29 individuals from the Berchtesgaden region. Abstract (German)
