Description
The isotropic Compton profile of samarium is presented in this work. The measurement has been made using our 661.65 keV 20 Ci 137Cs Compton spectrometer. The results are compared with our calculations based on renormalised-free-atom (RFA) and free electron models. It is seen that the RFA calculation for configuration 4f 65d 06s2 (with e- - e- correlation) is in better agreement with the experiment. Using our RFA model, we have also derived the cohesive energy of samarium. A comparison of RFA based cohesive energy with the available band structure data shows the applicability of the RFA model in calculating the electronic structure of rare-earth elements. (author)
