Method of producing radioactive waste intermediate storing products

  • 1. Nippon Atomic Industry Group Co. Ltd., Tokyo

Description

Purpose: To enable safety storage of radioactive wastes as intermediate storage by heating to melt the wastes to a temperature higher than the melting point of inorganic salts and cooling to solidify them in a heat and corrosion resistant canister. Method: Radioactive liquid wastes containing inorganic salts, for example, sodium sulfate are dried in a customary manner into powdery product. The powder is heated to melt at a temperature higher than the melting point. Then, they are cooled without adding any solidifying material into solid lumps with no powderization. The solids can be stored safely as intermediate storing products by sealing in a castor made of ceramic or metal which is heat resistant and not reactive with the solids as neutral salts.
