Collective variable description of a high-gain free-electron laser amplifier with plasma background

  • 1. Universidade Federal Fluminense, Niteroi, RJ (Brazil). Inst. de Fisica

Description

The free-electron laser (FEL) instability with a warm plasma background is analysed. The excited plasma modes are responsible for a dramatically increasing of the exponential growth rate of the instability when the plasma thermal speed relative to the radiation group velocity and the plasma density background relative to the average beam density are large.
