In 2015, the energy sector accounted for 2% of value added in France. The drop in crude oil prices, which almost halved, allowed France to lower its annual energy bill to less than euros 40 billion. National primary energy production provides for around 55 % of the national total primary energy supply. While France imports almost all of the fossil fuels it consumes and has progressively diversified the geographical origin of such imports, the introduction of the nuclear programme has allowed the country to export electricity for more than 30 years. Electricity and gas, which emit less greenhouse gases than oil or coal, are progressively replacing the latter in the main sectors of the economy, even though oil remains unavoidable for transport.
