Depositions in Bavarian forest soils and seepage water quality in forest sites as evaluated in the framework of the Bavarian soil protection concept

In view of the continuous deposition of airborne pollutants and with the aim of protecting forest soils and water resources, within the framework of the soil protection concept of the Bavarian state forest administration the Bavarian silvicultural experimental and research institution carried out and set up a series of investigation programmes. Distribution and temporal development of the air pollutant entries are presented by means of results already available for different forest landscales of Bavaria. The two most important problem fields are: Acid deposition with possible soil acidification and heavy metal pollution of the waters on the one hand; as well as nitrogen depositions with possible nitrate pollution of groundwater on the other hand. For this, the regionally differentiated hazard potentials are shown; they are discussed, also with regard to possible silvicultural countermeasures. (orig.)
