Shielding design study for the SPring-8

  • 1. Japan Atomic Energy Research Inst., Tokai, Ibaraki (Japan). Tokai Research Establishment

Description

An 8 GeV Synchrotron Radiation Facility (Spring-8) now under construction is an electron (positron) accelerator complex consisting of a 1 GeV linear accelerator, an 8 GeV synchrotron and a full energy storage ring with the maximum stored beam of 100 mA. For the shielding design calculation are employed the criteria of 2 μSv/h at the boundary of the controlled area and of 50 μSv/y to members of general public at the nearest access. Shield thicknesses are calculated with the well verified formulas, using the conservative electron beam loss assumption. The methods, calculational conditions for and the results of the shielding design calculation together with beam loss assumptions are described. (authors). 12 refs., 6 figs., 6 tabs
