Spectral and photoelectric observations of V 407 Cygni and AS 338

Description

The results are given of photometric (in the UBVRJHKLMN system) and spectral (range 4,300-7,200 angstrom) observations of the object V 407 Cyg, which is included in the catalog of symbiotic stars, and the symbiotic star AS 338. It is shown that during the time of their observations the radiation of V 407 Cyg, a variable red giant surrounded by a dust envelope, did not reveal definite signs of the presence of a hot source of radiation that would permit classification of the object as a symbiotic star. In the spectrum of V 407 Cyg the lines Hα and Hβ were not observed, whereas the lines (N II) 6548 and 6584 were. During 1986-1987 the brightness of AS 338 in the visible wavelength range continued to decrease. Nevertheless, the spectrum of the star still did not acquire a symbiotic nature, so that for more than four years AS 338 has been in a state in which its hot component can be classified as a star of the spectral class B with envelope
