Description
The present status of accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) applications implying some important cosmogenic long-lived radioisotopes, in particular 10 Be, 14 C, 26 Al, 36 Cl, 55 Fe, and 129 I, is discussed. Some applications concerning these radionuclides in archaeology, hydrology, biology are given. Novel applications in nuclear energy exploration research, detection of impurities in electronic materials and metals and in semiconductor improvements are presented. The AMS experiments which are related to properties of nuclei and particles and to nuclear reactions are also described. Some predictions for the future of AMS due to the improvement of ion sources, low-energy mass analysis and detectors are discussed. A proposal for a project of AMS in the Institute of Atomic Physics (IFA) and the questions that can be solved by using this facility are presented. (author) 6 figs., 2 tabs., 35 refs
