Electron-positron interactions
Description
Electron-positron physics is making rapid progress. First, there was the detection of the PSI-3105 meson (Brookhaven and SLAC, 1974), followed not much later by observations of the PSI-3695 and other vector mesons. The PSI particles are characterized by their heavy mass (e.g. m(PSI-3105) = 3.09 GeV) and their extraordinarily long lifetime which suggests that the structure of PSI particles is qualitatively different from the hadrows known so far. They may be states of a new quark type, the charmed quark, bound analogously to the positronium. This assumption is supperted by the observation of intermediate states produced mainly by photoemission. In the charm picture, these decays correspond to the ortho-parapositronium transitions. Die e+e--Physik durchlaeuft gegenwaertig eine stuermische Entwicklung. Sie wurde eingeleitet durch die Entdeckung des PSI-3105 Mesons (Brookhaven and SLAC, 1974) der wenig spaeter die Beobachtung des PSI-3695 und weiterer Vektormesonen folgte (SLAC). Das besondere an den PSI Teilchen ist ihre hohe Masse (z.B. m(PSI-3105) = 3.09 GeV) und die aussergewoehnlich lange Lebensdauer. Diese letztere zwingt zur Annahme, dass sich die PSI-Teilchen in ihrem Aufbau qualitativ von den bisher bekannten Hadronen unterscheiden. Moeglicherweise sind sie analog zum Positronium gebundene Zustaende eines neuen Quarktyps, dem charm Quark. Diese Annahme wird durch die Entdeckung von Zwischenzustaenden gestuetzt, die hauptsaechlich durch Photoemission erreicht werden. Im charm-Bild entsprechen diese Zerfaelle den Ortho-Parapositronium-Uebergaengen. (orig.)
