Compressibility effect on magnetic-shear-localized ideal magnetohydrodynamic interchange instability

  • 1. Department of Engineering Physics, University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin 53706-1609 (United States)

Description

Eigenmode analysis of a magnetic-shear-localized ideal magnetohydrodynamic interchange instability in the presence of plasma compressibility indicates the marginal stability criterion (DI=1/4) is not affected by the compressibility effects. Above the marginal stability criterion, plasma compressibility causes a significant reduction in the growth rate of an ideal interchange instability
