Effect of irradiation on testicular cells of opossum

Five months old male opossums were exposed to 5000 rd wholebody 60Co γ-radiation. Testes tissues from animals sacrificed at 16, 40 and 90 hours post-irradiation and from nonirradiated animals were used for enzymatic and histological studies. Electrophoretic pattern of lactate dehydrogenase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase was slightly disturbed in early hours in irradiated animals, but it did not persist beyond 40 hours postirradiation. Histological study indicates 31% survival of type A spermatogonia suggesting high radioresistance of testes tissue in comparison to other animals. (orig.)
Abstract (German)
Fuenf Monate alte maennliche Opossums erhielten eine 60Co-Gamma-Ganzkoerperbestrahlung mit 5000 rd. Die Tiere wurden 16, 40 und 90 Stunden nach Bestrahlung getoetet und ihr Hodengewebe sowie das von unbestrahlten Tieren zu enzymatischen und histologischen Untersuchungen verwendet. Das elektrophoretische Muster der Lactat-Dehydrogenase und der Glucose-6-phosphat-Dehydrogenase war bei bestrahlten Tieren zunaechst geringfuegig gestoert, aber dies hielt nicht laenger an als 40 Stunden nach der Bestrahlung. Die histologische Untersuchung ergibt 31% ueberlebende Spermatogonien vom Typ A, so dass beim Opossum eine vergleichsweise hohe Strahlenresistenz des Hodengewebes anzunehmen ist.
