Modification of polydimethylsiloxane surface by graft polymerization of Acrylamide with Co2 pulsed laser

Description

Acrylamide was grafted onto polydimethylsiloxane surface. A silicone sheet was first treated with a CO2 - pulsed laser in oxygen atmosphere to introduce peroxides onto the surface. Such polymeric peroxides were capable of initiating graft polymerization onto Pdms. The concentration of peroxide introduced to the surface was determined using iodide method and the maximum concentration was about 7 * 10-7 mol/cm2 when a single laser pulse was performed onto Pdms surface. Graft polymerization was allowed to proceed by heating the aqueous solution of the monomer together with the immersed Pdms pe-irradiated with the CO2-pulsed laser. Unless de aeration, graft polymerization of A Am did not occur, irrespective of heating. The surface of control laser treated and polyacrylamide modified Pdms rubber were characterized by ATR-FTIR and scanning electron microscopy, and staining techniques
