Description
The author discusses the interactions of super-heavy monopoles with stars, summarizing the monopole capture rate as a function of stellar and monopole mass. Among neutron star progenitors (M -- 10M/sub sub solar/), convection prevents monopole-antimonopole annihilations and all but the strongly magnetic stars retain a substantial fraction of the monopoles they capture. Including monopoles captured on the main sequence strengthens the upper bound on the monopole flux due to monopole-catalyzed nucleon decay in neutron stars by six orders of magnitude F/sub M/ σ/sub -27/ < 10/sup -27/ cm/sup -2/ sec /sup -1/ sr/sup -1/ (where the catalysis cross-section σ/sub c/ = σ/sub -27/ 10/sup -27/ cm/sup 2/)
