Core conversion studies for the use of LEU fuel at the Delft reactor HOR

Description
For the Hor research reactor (3 MW max.) the conversion from HEU to LEU fuel was investigated by Interatom. A LEU fuel element with 300 g U235 loading and the uranium density of 4.3 g/cm3 was found as suitable. With this element a LEU working core and a transition phase were developed. The LEU working core was analyzed and compared with the HEU cores with respect to nuclear design, thermal-hydraulic design and safety including radioactive release, fission product and actinide inventory. The results of the investigations revealed no major problems and no objections to the planned way of conversion. (orig.)
