Production of waste packages for final disposal

  • 1. GNS Gesellschaft fuer Nuklear-Service mbH, Essen (Germany)

Description

The plan for the final repository Konrad targets to the emplacement of about 6.000 m3 conditioned waste at the time of start-up. The production of appropriate waste packages is therefore the center of technical and administrative efforts in the frame of disposal preparation. The existing waste forms have to be checked and qualified by specific measures, where necessary. In the future the conditioning of radioactive waste (operational waste and waste from reactor dismantling) has to be performed according to the BfS requirements for final disposal. Precondition for the production of appropriate waste packages is the accurate acquirement, availability and documentation of relevant information and certificates. The required activities are actually identified in the frame of the project KONRAD, concepts and recommendations are documented and adjusted between all participants of the process. Combined with the extension of the conditioning facility and the required infrastructure it should be possible to reach the precondition for the production of appropriate waste packages in the range of up to 6.000 m3 per year.
