Measurements of fragmentation cross section for ultra heavy nuclei using high performance plastic nuclear track detector

Description

Fragmentation cross sections of ultra-heavy nuclei (Z>30) on hydrogen are very important for the study of the propagation mechanism of galactic cosmic ray (GCR) in the interstellar space. We have performed the beam experiments to measure the fragmentation cross sections for Ge, Kr and some GCR main components such as Ne, Si, Ar, Ti, and Fe on C and CH2 targets using CR-39 plastic nuclear track detectors (PNTD). A new method to make precise measurements of the cross sections using CR-39 PNTD was developed and then the measurements were carried out. The data analysis for the measurements of cross section is in progress. In this report, the results obtained by Fe beam exposure are presented. (author)
