Nuclear safety in Eastern Europe

  • 1. Division of Nuclear Safety, International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna (Austria)

Description

The safety of nuclear power plants in East European countries has been receiving increased international attention since a few years ago. The International Atomic Energy Agency initiated activities on the appraisal of the safety of the WWER-440/230 in 1990 at the request of and in co-operation with the concerned owner countries. These activities gave the necessary background for decisions to be made for upgrading the plants' safety. It is now planned to follow up the implementation phase of the programme and to initiate some new activities concerning the safety of WWER-1000 and RBMK reactors in co-operation with the countries operating these reactors.
