Statement of nuclear incidents at nuclear installations: 4th quarter 1993
Description
Two incidents are reported. The first was the iodine adsorption plant of Reactor 1 at Bradwell Reactor, where moisture was discovered in the sampling lines. The iodine adsorption plant is needed to remove radioactive iodine from the reactor gas in the event of fuel failure. The reactor was shutdown and the defective plant cleared, refurbished and tested before the reactor was restarted. The second was at British Nuclear Fuel's Sellafield reprocessing plant where there was a leak from a sludge tank. The liquid lost was similar to that routinely discharged by Sellafield and the risk to workers and the general public was assessed as negligible. Options to reduce the leak are being discussed. (UK)
