Thermohydraulic analysis of internally cooled superconductors

Description

Background on recent experimental tests of Internally Cooled Superconductors are discussed. Work with a thermohydraculic analysis of ICS systems is described which takes into account the high heat transfer coefficient due to transient effects and predicts an induced flow for an originally stagnant helium. The model used takes into account the effect of the heat transfer from the warm helium to the steel jacket, the possible decay of the current in the superconductor during a quench, and the corresponding decay of the magnetic field. The computer code WESTAC appears to correctly analyze the thermal characteristics of internally cooled superconductors. WESTAC is found to be a useful tool for analysing internally cooled superconductors found such design aspects as stability, quench pressure and temperature rise, joint analysis and current lead design
