This note presents principles which have been identified by a work group and which should be guidelines for waste management during a post-accidental phase. It also identifies and discusses objectives to be reached to be able to implement these principles, as well as actions which must be as of now anticipated. The authors first propose an overview of lessons learned from past events in terms of waste management in the case of radioactive wastes (in different countries after the Chernobyl accident) or of oil slicks (Erika). Wastes are then characterised with respect to their origin (rural, urban, related to some intervention), and management criteria are defined. The report then gives an overview of waste management methods (combustion, water treatment, soil treatment, methanization, transformation, warehousing and storage, and so on), and makes some propositions of waste management solutions. The same issues are present in more recent versions of this report, and other aspects are also addressed such as the management doctrine according to the radiological contamination, to the concerned area, to the type of materials or manufactured products, to waste transport, and to population information
