CW linear accelerator developments at CRNL - status and future

Description
Accelerators operating cw (100% duty cycle) have been under study at CRNL for many years. Much of this work was undertaken to develop the technology necessary for a fissile-fuel producing accelerator breeder. However there are areas of more immediate interest (intense radiation sources, research applications) where cw operation has advantages over low duty cycle. A brief summary of the past twenty years of cw accelerator development at CRNL will be given. Current projects under construction or in operation will be described. These projects include high current DC ion sources, a 75 mA, 600 keV proton RFQ, a high current 4 MeV electron linac, and the 500 MHz accelerating structures for the HERA proton ring. Future plans, including possible uses of proton and electron accelerators in research and industry, will also be discussed. (orig.)
