Some examples of accidental irradiations in medical and industrial surroundings

Description
In professional surroundings irradiation accidents from gamma sources and X-ray generators are rare but often serious, as shown by the few examples chosen. From these cases a number of lessons will be learned, pointing in the direction of more efficient radioprotection. The causes of such accidents are many, and though some are due to lack of experience on the part of operators others must be blamed on material deficiencies. Legislation obliging users to possess the certificate of fitness to handle radioscopy and industrial radiography instruments (C.A.M.A.R.R.I.) and revision of the N.F. norms for this equipment should logically result in the reduction if not elimination of these accidents
Abstract (French)
En milieu professionnel, les accidents d'irradiation par source gamma et generateur X sont peu courants, mais souvent severes, comme l'illustrent les quelques exemples choisis. De ces cas proposes, on retirera un certain nombre d'enseignements allant dans le sens d'une radioprotection plus efficace. Les causes de ces accidents sont multiples. Si certaines relevent de l'inexperience des manipulateurs, d'autres sont a mettre au compte de deficiences materielles. L'obligation faite par le legislateur d'imposer aux utilisateurs le certificat d'aptitude a manipuler les appareils de radioscopie et de radiographie industriels (C.A.M.A.R.R.I.) et la revision des normes N.F. de ce materiel, devraient logiquement conduire a diminuer, sinon a supprimer ces accidentsAdditional details
