Measuring the accelerated expansion of the universe with the Supernova Legacy Survey

Description

The array of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes HESS (High Energy Stereoscopic System) is described. The simulation of atmospheric showers and of the detector is presented in detail and compared to the data obtained during the first six months of operation. The calibration and signal extraction methods are presented and applied to the data taken on the Crab nebula. A significant signal is obtained, and the measured differential flux at 1 TeV is in agreement with the results from other experiments in the same energy range. This analysis permits to estimate the potential of HESS for the detection of a gamma ray signal from neutralino annihilation in the galactic centre and in the globular cluster Omega Centauri. In this study, models of dark matter haloes are constrained with astrophysical observations

Abstract (French)

Le reseau d'imageurs Cherenkov atmospheriques HESS (High Energy Stereoscopic System) est presente. La simulation des gerbes atmospheriques et de l'instrument est detaillee et comparee aux donnees obtenues pendant les six premiers mois de fonctionnement. Apres la presentation des methodes d'etalonnage et d'extraction du signal gamma, ces techniques sont appliquees aux donnees prises sur la nebuleuse du Crabe. On obtient un signal significatif permettant d'estimer un flux differentiel a 1 TeV en accord avec les resultats obtenus par d'autres experiences dans le meme domaine en energie. Ces resultats sont exploites pour estimer le potentiel de detection de HESS au signal gamma d'annihilation de neutralinos en provenance du centre galactique et de l'amas globulaire Omega du Centaure. Dans cette etude, une modelisation des halos de matiere noire est confrontee aux observations astrophysiques
