Radionuclides in coastal and estuarine sediments from Wirral and Lancashire

Description
Radionuclide level in surface sediments from estuarine and intertidal areas of the Wirral and Lancashire coastlines have been measured by gamma assay, and are compared with values on the Cumbrian coast close to Sellafield. The relationship between particle size and activity is investigated, as well as the association with a number of magnetic mineral parameters in order to establish whether such measurements are of use in predicting variations in activity related to particle size composition. Down-profile variations of 137Cs, 134Cs and 241Am are determined for a number of estuarine cores and are used to assess net accumulation rates. Isotope inventories are calculated in order to assess the extent to which radionuclides from Sellafield have been concentrated in estuarine sediments. 11 refs.; 6 figs.; 8 tabs
