Cost-efficient superconductor generators based on MgB2 for the wind energy down market. Final report

Description

The project ''feasibility study of the use of MgB2 superconductors for wind energy plant generators'' was aimed to wind energy turbines in the range 2 - 4 MW, cost reduction potentials of up to 30% compared to conventional direct drives were intended. The fundamentals of design and construction of the generator were developed by CAD modification of an existing construction; the application of MgB2 superconductors was evaluated. Critical issues (current density, magnetic induction, parasitic electromagnetic effects) were analyzed in detail by finite-element methods. The analysis showed that the cost reduction target can be reached.
