The role of nuclear power in environmentally benign energy strategies

Description

Social, economic and technical constraints limit the number of options available for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental burdens from the power sector. The particular environmental protection advantages of electricity generation from nuclear power are highlighted. The role that nuclear power is already playing in alleviating the risk of global climatic change is described. Future scenarios are presented which illustrate how revived nuclear power programmes could contribute to sustainable development as a key part of an environmentally benign electricity supply strategy. Some opportunities and challenges for governments and the nuclear industry in the light of evolving energy policies are identified. (15 references). (UK)
