Biological and comparative distribution of radiopharmaceuticals for renal studies. Evaluation of some radiopharmaceuticals for renal location using autoradiography techniques

This work aimed at comparing the biological distribution in rats dealing with the following nine radiopharmaceuticals: 2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid, diethylentriaminpentacetic acid and glucoheptonate labeled with 99m-Tc; pertechnetate; labeled penicillamine with 113m In; labeled hippuran with 131-I; 2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid, mercaptopropionilglicine and mercuric chloride labeled with 197-Hg. Intrarenal distribution in dogs of 99m-Tc-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid, 99m-Tc-glucoheptonate, 131-I-hippuran, 113m-In-penicillamine and 197-Hg-mercaptopropionilglicine was studied by autoradiography. The biological distribution in rats was studied by counting samples of different organs, including the renal system as a whole. It was concluded that HgCl2, 99m-Tc-2,3 dimercaptosuccinic acid and 197-Hg mercaptopropionilglicine showed a renal fixation above 50%, varying with their urinary excretion. 99m-Tc-diethylentriamin pentacetic acid, 99m-Tc-glucoheptonate and 197-Hg - 2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid presented similar characteristics to hippuran, with fast renal filtration and accumulation in the urine. Autoradiographies with X-ray films and without high speed screens produce good images, except with 113m-In-penicillamine. It was demonstrated that 99m-Tc-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid and 197-Hg-mercaptopropionilglicine are useful radiopharmaceuticals for the visualization of the renal cortex. 99m-Tc-glucoheptonate proved to be useful for the visualization of the cortex and renal pelvis.
