New types of spark-chambers for imaging γ or x emitters, and their medical applications

Description
In order to adapt spark-chambers to low-energy particles, a first attempt was made using a two-electrode device operating as a proportional counter. The signal obtained triggers a high-voltage pulse which is applied to the same device and a spark occurs near the track of the particle. A three-electrode device including a detection space associated to the sparks space was then used. It was noticed that the spark was formed spontaneously at the point where the particle passed, when suitable direct-current voltages were applied to the electrodes; the high voltage is slightly lower than on the other types of chamber. This phenomenon makes the three-electrode device very easy to use for X or γ rays. The characteristics of the first device filled with argon and methane are given and the first results obtained in the medical field with a device filled with xenon methylal are presented. (author)

Pour adapter les chambres a etincelles aux particules de faible energie, un premier essai a ete fait avec un dispositif a deux electrodes fonctionnant au repos comme un compteur proportionnel. Le signal obtenu commandait une impulsion de haute tension; celle-ci etait appliquee su meme dispositif et provoquait une etincelle au point de passage de la particule. Ensuite, un montage a trois electrodes, comprenant un espace de detection en plus de l'espace pour les etincelles, a ete utilise. Il a ete remarque que l'etincelle se forme spontanement a l'endroit de passage de la particule avec des tensions continues correctes sur les electrodes; la haute tension est un peu plus faible que sur les autres types de chambre. Ce phenomene fait du montage a trois electrodes un dispositif d'emploi facile pour les rayons X ou γ. Les caracteristiques d'un premier appareil rempli d'argon methane sont donnees ainsi que les premiers resultats obtenus dans les applications medicales avec un appareil rempli de xenon methylal.
